How to Get Anxiety Medication in Colorado with Medicaid

If you’re dealing with anxiety and trying to figure out how to get medication through Medicaid in Colorado, the process can feel confusing at first. The good news: it’s absolutely doable, and once you understand the steps, it becomes much more manageable.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you get started.

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Enrolled in Medicaid

In Colorado, Medicaid is called Health First Colorado. If you’re not already enrolled, that’s your first step.

You can apply online through the Colorado PEAK website, by mail, or in person at a county human services office. Approval can take a few weeks, but sometimes it’s faster depending on your situation.

Once you’re approved, you’ll get a Medicaid ID number and can start using your benefits.

Step 2: Choose or Find a Provider

Medicaid doesn’t usually let you just walk into any doctor’s office, you’ll need to see a provider who accepts it.

You have a few options:

  • Use the Health First Colorado provider search tool

  • Call your Medicaid plan for help finding someone nearby

  • Contact a local community mental health center directly

Thankfully though, if you’re reading this, you are already connected with a provider that accepts Colorado Medicaid! All you would need to do is submit your information on the Appointment Request page to start getting care with Hope & Healing Mental Health Collective.

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Scheduling an appointment with Hope & Healing is very easy.

  1. Submit your information on the Appointment Request form

  2. We will email you to let you know if we accept your insurance & we will send you a Welcome email to the Healthie patient portal

  3. Click the link in the email for your Healthie patient portal. Sign the consent forms and submit your credit card information (nothing will be charged at that time or ever without your knowledge!)

  4. Look through the calendar to find an appointment time that works for you!

Step 4: Get Evaluated

At your appointment, a provider will:

  • Ask about the symptoms that have been bothering you

  • Review your medical history

  • Talk about medications and therapies you have tried in the past for your symptoms

  • What you would like to do about your symptoms now

Being honest and specific helps us understand you better and helps guide us to choose the right treatment.

If medication makes sense, we will prescribe it!

Step 5: Fill Your Prescription

We submit your prescription virtually to a pharmacy of your choosing. We will need the name of the pharmacy and the address.

Good to know:

  • Many anxiety medications are fully covered or very low cost with Medicaid insurance

If there’s an issue at the pharmacy, don’t panic, send us a message through your patient portal so we can help fix it.

Step 6: Follow Up

Medication for anxiety often takes a few weeks to fully work, and sometimes it needs adjusting.

You’ll have follow-up appointments to:

  • Check how the medication is working

  • Adjust dosage if needed

  • Manage side effects

Don’t skip this part! It’s key to getting real relief. We want to hear how you’re adjusting to the medication. Even if it’s not going well, tell us about it so we can help! Sometimes it’s as simple as adjusting the dose to make the transition easier.

If You’re Not Sure Where to Start

If everything feels overwhelming, please sent us an email. Let us know you have Medicaid and need help with anxiety. We will guide you through the rest.

Getting anxiety medication through Medicaid in Colorado isn’t as complicated as it might seem at first. The key steps are: get covered, fill out the Appointment Request form, set up Healthie portal to schedule your evaluation, get your prescriptions, and follow up!

If you’re struggling, it’s worth taking that first step. Help is available, and Medicaid is designed to make sure cost isn’t the barrier.
