Stigma & Medicaid

If you live in Colorado and need affordable health coverage, Health First Colorado, the state’s Medicaid program, can be a powerful resource. Yet many people hesitate to apply due to confusion or stigma. Let’s break down how it works, how to apply, and why it can be a positive step for your health and well-being.

What is Health First Colorado?

Health First Colorado is public health insurance designed for individuals and families who meet certain income and eligibility requirements. It covers a wide range of services including doctor visits, prescriptions, preventive care, and more. Importantly, it also includes behavioral health services, meaning mental health and substance use treatment are covered for members. At many practices, including Hope & Healing Mental Health Collective, this means mental health appointment fees are either fully covered or have very low out-of-pocket costs, making services much more accessible.

How to Apply for Health First Colorado

Applying is simpler than many people expect. The fastest way is online through the state’s application system: Apply for benefits on Colorado PEAK

Visit the PEAK website and create an account. Fill out your application. Many applicants receive eligibility results instantaneously

You can also apply, in person at your local county human services office, by phone (1-800-221-3943), or by mail using a printed application

Despite the benefits of using Medicaid insurance, such as many services having no co-pays  some people feel hesitant to apply due to stigma. Let’s talk about that honestly.

Why the stigma exists?

There are many misconceptions about who qualifies and a strong fear of being judged for needing government support. There are numerous ways we can go about Reframing Medicaid to ensure those who can benefit from it, will actually go access it.

~It’s a resource you qualify for, not a handoutHealth First Colorado exists to make sure people can access healthcare when they need it. If you qualify, you’ve met the criteria, just like any other insurance program.

~Your health matters more than opinions. Delaying care, including mental health care, can have long-term consequences. Using available coverage is a proactive, responsible decision to ensure health for your long term goals.

~Many people use Medicaid at different points in life. Life circumstances change, job transitions, relationship changes, attending school, changing family needs. Medicaid can provide stability during those times when you could really use the extra help.

~Access to care is a form of self-respect. Choosing to take care of your physical and mental health is a strong and positive step towards self reliance.
